Most provinces, through the Red Cross, are currently providing refugees with 1-2 weeks of housing. This is particularly true for Ukrainians under the CUAET visa.
This gives refugees some time to find long-term housing, but not nearly enough given the competitive marketplace for housing in most Canadian cities.
This is most relevant for the Ukraine crisis - many Canadians have been opening up their homes to temporarily house Ukrainian refugees. This might be for a few weeks or a few months. Hosting is not being centrally coordinated, meaning that some refugees find hosts via platforms like Facebook, and some find hosts through other initiatives.
It is critical for refugees to make sure that their hosts have passed some form of background check. Haven provides this background check service with our partner Certn. Other organizations may or may not require that hosts conduct background checks.
