How can I match with Canadians?
</aside>
Welcome! We are so happy you’re here. This is a place to practice real English in a friendly, safe way. You will speak with a Canadian volunteer who wants to help you feel more confident.
Here is how it works:
If you are a student in the Haven Language Program (HLP), you must meet with a volunteer at least 2 times every week.
This is an important part of your learning and helps you improve faster.
You can meet with the same volunteer each time or with different ones — both options are okay!
You can meet on different days, and each conversation can be short or long — that’s up to you and your volunteer.
✅ Practicing often is the best way to feel more confident in speaking English!
Start with this guide:
Your First Chat: Introductions and Learning Goals
You’ll talk about yourself — your name, where you’re from, your daily life, learning goals, and any experiences you’d like to share.
This first conversation helps you and your volunteer get to know each other and feel more comfortable.
After that, you can start choosing fun and interesting topics to explore together!
After the first conversation, you and your volunteer will choose a Chat Pack from a list.
Each Chat Pack has 4–6 small conversations. Try to finish the full pack together — this helps you see your progress!
